CANCER FIGHT TAKES TO RUNWAY

- TALISA ELEY

WHEN Robyn Cameron was diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time, a strange emotion struck her to the core – guilt.

The Gold Coast woman was 46 in 2004 when she began chemotherapy for cancerous cells in one of her breasts.

Eight years earlier, in 1996, she had survived cancer in the same breast. Her children were aged just five and eight.

“I went through a lot of guilt as a mother that during their formative years that they had a really sick mum,” she said. “My son shut down and blocked it out, he didn’t tell his mates.”

The aggressive form of cancer possessed her body as chemotherapy took its toll, resulting in days where walking to the letterbox was an unwinnable challenge.

Now “fighting fit” Dr Cameron said she was driven to help raise money for breast cancer research through the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

She will co-host the Gold Coast’s first Catwalk to a Cure event at Marina Mirage tomorrow.

The event is set to become an annual event on the social calendar, featuring wine, canapes and a live fashion parade.

Dr Cameron will be joined by fellow cancersurvivor Rebecca Moffat, who was diagnosed two years ago at age 26.

Both women are passionate about improving survival rates through better treatment and earlier detection, as well as improving quality of live for those undergoing treatment.
