LAWSON HOMES IN ON PRO-AM WIN

- TOM BOSWELL

DEYEN Lawson is in the box seat to win Australia’s richest pro-am as he looks to continue a stunning five months of golf.

The Gold Coast resident and European Tour player enters the second and final day of the GC Celebrity ProAm at Lakelands Golf Club with a two-shot lead after firing an eight-under-par 64 yesterday.

Michael Wright (66) was in second spot ahead of Matthew Griffin (67).

Lawson won a $250,000 BMW after hitting a hole-inone at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in South Africa late last year and is well placed to claim the bulk of the $150,000 prize purse in this week’s event.

“I played steady for the first 11 holes and then I had seven-under on the last seven holes which turned it around a bit,” Lawson said.

“I hit three-wood from about 230 feet to about three feet and then birdied my last hole as well so I was pretty happy with the finish.”

With heavy rain falling in Queensland over the past week, a clear day was welcome at Lakelands with increasing winds helping to dry out the course.

“The weather held out this morning which was good and dried out the course so it’s playing really good,” Lawson said.

“The greens are rolling well and it’s a nice course.”

Lawson, 28, is back on the Coast recovering between events. He will return to the European tour for the Trophee Hassan II tournament in Morocco after hopefully bagging a win in his home city.

“I had a week off not long ago so I’ve just gotten back into practice now over the last week,” Lawson said.

“There’s still three or so more weeks before I head away to Morocco so it’s just good to be home, really.

“I haven’t spent much time at home recently so it’s nice and relaxing.

“Any event you can play at home and win is always good. It would be very nice before I head away again.”
