NEW PLAYERS, FOOTYS ARRIVING

- TOM BOSWELL AND ANDREW HAMILTON

BROADBEACH have fought off competition from local and interstate clubs to sign former AFL player Jason Cloke.

Cloke will make his debut for the Cats tomorrow in the Round 1 QAFL grand final replay against Palm Beach Currumbin at Salk Oval after officially signing for the club this week.

The 36-year-old, who featured in the Magpies team that lost the 2003 AFL grand final to Brisbane in a five-year career that included 76 games, has been listed by Broadbeach for some time and given clearance by the AFLQ.

But he hadn’t put to pen to paper until this week after garnering offers from Cairns to Melbourne.

Cloke recently moved to the Gold Coast with his family and was weighing up his football future before becoming convinced Broadbeach was the place to be after spending time training with the group.

The 189cm key position player kicked four goals in the Cats’ pre-season win over Wilston Grange on March 23 but coach Beau Zorko is yet to reveal if he will play Cloke at forward or back against the Lions.

Cloke is the perfect replacement for ex-Brisbane Lion and Richmond forward Luke McGuane who has hung up the boots.

Meanwhile, new footballs with the slogan “It Stops With Me’’ printed on the side will be used this QAFL season.

The positive social change comes after a new partnership between AFL Queensland, the State Government and Racism. It Stops with Me.
