Dramatic result as Rule is overthrown

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

TRAINER Les Kelly went into Saturday’s race meeting at Gold Coast thinking new stable edition Dramatic Moments needed more fitness and Ruler was a likely winner.

The bookmakers agreed, giving Dramatic Moments $19 while branding Rule the favourite at $3.40 for the Class 1 Handicap (1300m).

Rule loomed up to the front with 350m to go and looked set to go on with it before Dan Griffin pounced as Dramatic Moments showed his strength on the inside on a soft Aquis Park track to take the prize.

“They were both resuming and we actually thought Dramatic Moments would need the run,” Kelly said.

“I only got him towards the end of his last preparation. He had a few issues but we sorted them out. I think he will be pretty good when he gets a bit older and over more distance.

“Maybe Ruler needed the run more than he did.”

Dramatic Moments had one win from seven runs to his name when the four-yearold arrived at Kelly’s Gold Coast stables.

He finished 10th over 1400m and second over 1800m before having a spell in October.

The gelding had a soft trial over 1000m a fortnight ago and has now won his second race, beating Cavalli in a close finish.

In the very next race hoop Anthony Allen successfully steered More Than Ready progeny Per Ardua to his first win for trainer Stuart Kendrick in the Maiden Plate (900m).

“That was a really good run, an explosive win,” Allen said post-race.

“He has been a bit funny over 1000m and 1100m and wasn’t finishing off strong but he got to a nice spot (on Saturday).

“He really appreciated the tempo of the race and he was motoring through the track to hit the line strong.

“He let down nicely down the straight.”
