FIRST SCALP AT FORTRESS PIGGABEEN

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

TWEED have taken the first step towards making Piggabeen Sports Complex a “fortress” after notching their maiden South East Queensland women’s rugby league win in their inaugural home game.

Coming off a 36-0 loss to Easts on debut in a scoreline that Seagulls personnel felt was not representative, they bounced back in style, accounting for Toowoomba 34-8 on Saturday.

“There were some really good areas where we were flowing and we were in our game plan and then there were some handling errors and a few defensive errors,” frontrower CJ Sims said.

“That sort of put us on the back foot but we definitely stood up and defended our goal line really, really well and then our attack is really coming together now.”

Halves Tarryn Aiken and Chloe Saddler, plus hooker Abbie Beecher, were central to the attack and Sims feels the result will be a “confidence booster for the girls”.

“It definitely shows what we are capable of. There are still areas that we need to work on but that’s what training is for,” she said.

“(Winning our first home game) made it all the sweeter.

“We definitely want to make Piggabeen a fortress for us.”

Tweed face 2018 runners-up Wests next. Yesterday, Burleigh came from behind to defeat Easts 12-10.
