‘SUSPICIOUS’ FIRE DAMAGES HOUSE

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into a fire that damaged a vacant Biggera Waters home yesterday afternoon.

The blaze, on the corner of Helena and Parr streets, was reported by neighbours just after 4pm when smoke began billowing from the windows.

It’s believed the house had been vacated a few weeks before the fire. Although no one was inside at the time, the blaze is being treated as suspicious.

Southport Fire Station’s Station Officer Marcus Barrett said the house had been “fairly well damaged”, however neighbouring homes were not affected.

“No electricity was connected to the home, so we are treating it as slightly suspicious,” he said yesterday.

“Police will be taking it over once we’re finished ... we’ll probably have our investigators looking at it in the morning.”

Chrissy Moyle was driving home from work when she saw the smoke and called emergency services.

“I was driving down the street with my window down and heard all the bangs and crackles,” she said.

“An old lady with a walker said ‘can you please call triple-0’ and I told her I already had them on the phone.

“Then people started coming out, having a sticky beak as they do. A man said it had been vacant for three weeks ... but we weren’t sure if anyone was inside.”

Investigations into the cause and circumstances surrounding the fire are due to begin today.
