No bail for fire starter

-

A WOMAN, 24, accused of lighting a fire that destroyed a Currumbin Valley home will remain in custody for the coming weeks.

Maralinga Marina Sibley did not apply for bail when she appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to face a single charge of arson.

Sibley, a thin woman, wore a hospital gown for the brief court appearance.

Police allege a fire broke out in the Tomewin Mountain Rd house about 4am and destroyed the home.

A man and a woman, both aged 61, escaped. The man suffered burns to his hands.

The woman was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital for treatment.

Sibley is yet to enter a plea for the charge. Her lawyer, Sunil Dutt, of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Legal Service, asked for a brief of evidence to be put together.

Magistrate Louise Shepherd ordered it be disclosed by May 16. The matter will return to court on May 2.
