Tweed council to consider tourism restructure
TOURISM operations in the Tweed look set to get a shakeup on the back of a boom in tourism over a decade.
Plans include merging the Murwillumbah Visitor Information Centre (VIC) with Tweed Regional Museum, shifting the Tweed Heads VIC to Point Danger at Duranbah and creating a mobile VIC to serve the shire’s tourists.
The Tweed Tourism Company has compiled reports for Tweed Shire Council after it started operations as contractor in October, 2018.
It states in council documents that sticking to the “status quo is not a viable option”.
“The VIC Review has identified that the destination’s tourism visitation has grown by 34 per cent from 2008 to 2017,” it read. The company states it’s clear “visitor services are unaligned with the apparent uplift in overall visitation”.
It plans to launch a new tourism website spruiking the Tweed, will work with businesses to draw more meetings and conferences to town and has launched The Tweed Tourism Academy. The academy is an industry development program upskilling local tourism operators.
