- EMILY HALLORAN

COMEDY genius Chris Lilley has announced the launch date of his latest highly anticipated Netflix Original Series Lunatics, filmed on the Gold Coast.

Lilley, 43, spent months on the Coast while filming the 10part series where he stars as six individual main characters.

Several locations were used for filming, from Bond University, Platinum Nightclub and a furniture store in Murwillumbah.

In early May, Lilley and coproducer Laura Waters set up a production base near Kurrawa Park in Broadbeach and spent two days filming at the club, where actors and extras dressed as clubbers.

Varsity Lakes campus Bond University was showed off in the trailer disguised as an American College.

An insider told the Bulletin

last year filming took place at the campus between 12 to 14 hours a day and production took place outside on the grass and within lecture theatres.

The 10-part series will debut on April 19 after being filmed between March and June last year. It employed about 250 cast and extras, plus about 100 crew members.

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk expected the production to bring about $6.35 million to the local economy.

Lilley is well known for comedy shows, including Summer Heights High, Angry Boys, Ja’mie: Private School Girl

and Jonah from Tonga.
