Surfing for a bargain buy

- TALISA ELEY

GOLD Coasters aren’t afraid to buy second-hand to nab a good bargain and there is one item we are buying in droves.

According to the latest snapshot by Australia’s classifieds website Gumtree the most in-demand item on the Gold Coast is preloved surfboards.

The humble board reigned supreme on the list of most searched items on the Coast, along with boats and kayaks, fridges, cars and dining tables.

Gumtree spokeswoman Kirsty Dunn said she is not surprised locals are interested in scoring new outdoor toys.

“The water is a huge part of the day-to-day life on the Gold Coast, and most Gold Coast residents are looking for good quality, second-hand surfboards and boats for a great price,” she said.

“Even your neighbours in Brisbane aren’t searching for surfboards and boats as often as Gold Coast residents are.”

The Gold Coast is also a sucker for a freebie, with the “for free” section also among the most popular.

The item locals were most commonly looking to offload was furniture, followed by mobile phones as trend-savvy locals upgrade to a newer model.

Ms Dunn said clothing and jewellery were often the first items out the door during a spring clean and could be profitable for owners.

“We know from our Second Hand Economy report that clothing and jewellery are the top unwanted items in home across Australia.”
