Anti-gay post ‘liked’ by Ablett
TWO AFL footballers have been embroiled in the homophobic social media scandal that is set to cost rugby union star Israel Folau his professional career.
Geelong champion Gary Ablett and Carlton midfielder Matthew Kennedy were among the 37,000 Instagram users who clicked ‘like’ on Folau’s controversial post, which said gay people must repent or they will go to hell.
Rugby Australia is set to void Folau’s $4 million contract.
Former Suns skipper Ablett, 34, removed his ‘like’ yesterday.
The Cats were unaware of Ablett’s interaction with the post and did not order him to remove his ‘like’. Ablett and Kennedy are both deeply religious. Their interaction with the post is believed to be solely tied to the Christianity component, with Folau’s post including a verse from the Bible.
Kennedy is a practising Catholic who said in 2016: “My faith is really important to me and it’s a big part of who I am.”
The post drew outrage and was condemned by the Wallabies’ major sponsor, Qantas.
