YOUNG ACES LOOKING TO BRISBANE GLORY

-

BEENLEIGH was a bust but hopes remain high for Gold Coast’s tennis juniors as focus switches to Brisbane today.

Saturday’s finals at Griffith University Tennis Centre in the Beenleigh Age titles failed to deliver a Gold Coast winner as three hopefuls fell in their deciders.

Competing in sometimes blustery conditions, Carrara’s Livvy Davenport – the daughter of former St Kilda and Southport Sharks Aussie rules player Craig Davenport – went down 6-2, 6-2 to Brisbane’s fifth seed Jennifer Le Roux in the under-14 girls’ title decider.

It was a similar story in the under-12 boys, with Bill Chan (Singapore) defeating Tugun’s top seed Oliver King 7-6, 6-3.

In the under-12 girls, Lejla Buldo (Cleveland) edged out Carrara’s Emmerson Jones – the daughter of Olympic triathlete Loretta Harrop – 7-6, 6-3.

Other winners were Daniel Hammond (NZ, under-16 boys), Madeleine Perrin (Annerley, under-16 girls) and Heremana Courte (under-14 boys).

Focus now turns to the Brisbane Age titles, which began with yesterday’s qualifiers before the main rounds start today.

The biggest Age tournament in Queensland will run until Thursday.
