RAKING IT IN

14-year-old’s baked goods mixes make $20k in eight months

AN entrepreneurial Gold Coaster in her early teens is raking in the profits from an online business she started after baking for her mates.

Helensvale State High School Year 9 student Taylah Wright started Clean and Lean Mixes in August and estimates that in the eight months since she has had a revenue of $20,000.

Her thriving start-up now has several wholesalers and hundreds of online customers, and she has sold thousands of the mixes.

The 14-year-old had seen mother Kellie transform her lifestyle with healthy eating and running marathons.

Taylah decided to join her but wanted to keep some sweet treats and made her own mixes of healthy brownies, banana bread, protein pancakes and more.

Her lunch boxes became the envy of her friends – and Clean and Lean Mixes was born.

“Kids at school were asking me to make them healthy lunches because they don’t have time,” she said.

“I thought there was a gap in the market for yummy, healthy baked goods so I thought I could make a business out of this.”

Once a month she hires a commercial kitchen and with her mother’s help makes the mixes from vegan, organic ingredients.

The pair spend about four hours measuring ingredients depending on the number of wholesale orders.

Taylah designed the packaging labels and website herself all the while fitting it into her school schedule.

“I’ve been balancing school really well thanks to my mum and I got straight As last year,” she said.

“Sometimes I find it tough, especially when facing deadline to get stickers and everything printed but, I always knew I had to put a lot of effort into school and the business as well.”

The business has become a hit especially with mothers at her local gym.

“We were expecting to only sell a few to our friends and family and now some of our customers are international,” she said.

Taylah wants to be a surgeon when she finishes school and is saving her pennies for university fees.

Her efforts won her the Young Business Woman of the Year award at the Gold Coast Girls in Business Awards last month.

“It was an accomplishment,” she said.

“It was nice to know people appreciate what I’m doing because they nominated me.”

Clean and Lean Mixes’ products are available online or at Elite Supplements Coomera, Kudos Hair and Beauty, Foodworks James Street and Powerplant Supplements.
