GUINEAS UP NEXT

TOOWOOMBA trainer Thomas Lunney will weigh up whether to chase a start at the upcoming Gold Coast Guineas or send Million out for a break following her maiden win at Aquis Park.

Million broke through for the first win of her career on Saturday in the Fillies and Mares Maiden Handicap (1100m) in the seventh time at the races.

Lunney, 26, brought the three-year-old back from 1400m at her last start after initially believing the filly was searching for more ground.

“It was good to get the maiden win,” Lunney said.

“I have always had a big opinion of her. She has always worked the house down and her first start we went straight to town and she ran third behind Zoustyle.

“She came from last that day.

“We trained her to get over ground but we went back to training her like a sprinter and we took her back to 1100m for the weekend.

“We rode her quiet and she hit the line well, that’s what I asked of young (jockey) Jordan (Grob).

“He did what he was told and it worked. It was exciting to get the win for the owners.”

Lunney, the son of trainer Brett Lunney, said the connections were eager to send Million to the 3YO Guineas (1200m) at the Gold Coast on May 4 but he would wait to see how the filly recovered from Saturday’s run.

“A few of the owners would like to have a throw at the stumps at the Gold Coast Guineas. If not we might have a break.

“I’ll see how she pulls up and if they still want to have a crack I’ll throw a nomination in and we might go around.”
