Attacked for ‘pointing’ in club

- LEA EMERY

A GOLD Coast father knocked another man out cold and fractured his ankle because he thought he was being pointed at while in Surfers Paradise nightspot, Melbas.

The attack came after Benjamin Arron Coleman told his victim he was “(expletive) dead” as they walked from the club.

Coleman, 28, pleaded guilty in the Southport District Court to grievous bodily harm. Judge David Kent sentenced him to 18 months prison to be released on parole on July 14.

The court was told Coleman saw the victim and his girlfriend in Melbas in the early hours of December 8, 2017.

Coleman walked up to the 27-year-old man from behind and shoulder barged him. The man kicked out at Coleman who retaliated by punching the man. The punches immediately knocked the man out and as he fell, his ankle broke.

Defence lawyer Jason Buckland said Coleman’s former partner had worked with his victim’s girlfriend. Mr Buckland said Coleman thought the couple were pointing at him and making disparaging comments about his ability as a father.
