Offer veterans a shoulder to lean on this Anzac Day

-

IN the lead up to Anzac Day, I write to encourage people to reach out and support veterans in their community and the families of those who have served.

Anzac Day (April 25) is a significant day for many Australians as they pay tribute to all past and present servicemen and women who have defended our country. We also recognise the contribution of the families who have, and continue to, support them.

This time can be incredibly emotional for many, whether they have served or have friends or family members who have served.

It’s important to remember our current veterans who continue to struggle from service-related trauma, mental illness and injury, and provide them with necessary support.

Research shows that self-reported levels of psychological distress in transitioned ADF are almost three times higher than in the Australian community.

Reach out to friends, family, neighbours or colleagues who may be experiencing heightened emotions in the lead up to, and on, Anzac Day and offer a shoulder to lean on.

Together, we can help ensure our veterans and their families are supported.

At Mates4Mates we provide support services to ADF members with injuries, and their families, including psychology services, physical rehabilitation programs, social connection opportunities and employment support.

If you need support, phone 1300 4 MATES for information about our services. Alternatively, contact Open Arms on 1800 001 046 or Lifeline on 13 11 14 for immediate intervention.
