SING PRAISES OF BELOVED CHOIR

-

SINCE 1969, the Gold Coast City Choir has served the local community by singing at public events and presenting concerts at Easter, Christmas and during the year.

What started as a loose collection of singers from various churches, the choir formally came together to form the Gold Coast Combined Churches Choir.

In 1972, with the support of the late Sir Bruce Small, the choir adopted the name Gold Coast City Choir, to reflect its role in the wider community.

Sir Bruce was the mayor at the time and subsequently sang in the choir as a tenor.

This year the choir will celebrate 50 years of entertaining locals by presenting a major choral and orchestral work drawing together for the first time the Gold Coast City Choir, the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra, and the City of Gold Coast’s Arts Theatre at HOTA.

The anniversary was recently celebrated with a luncheon.

The luncheon was attended by current members and a number of former members including Bryan Smith, a foundation member.

The anniversary cake was cut by Daintry Pohlman, a life member, and Julie Watson representing the newer, younger members.

The choir’s musical director Sue Roberts said the upcoming September 14 performance of Sir Karl Jenkins’ Symphonic Adiemus was a fresh and exciting move.

“It will appeal to all music lovers, and we are proud to be presenting this work,” she said.

“Experienced singers are most welcome to join us and take part in presenting this challenging work.”

Rehearsals are held every Tuesday night from 7pm to 9.30pm at Tarrant Dve, Mudgeeraba.
