Southport go back-to-back with pennant crowns
THE Southport Golf Club’s men’s team proved their win in 2018 was no fluke when they again took out the Gold Coast District Golf Association Division One pennant title.
Southport defeated Sanctuary Cove by four matches to three in the final.
Without current Australian junior champion, Elvis Smylie and nationally ranked seniors champion Brad Dowling, the Southport men dug deep and won several tight matches which were ultimately decided on the 18th green on the Links Hope Island green.
The Sanctuary Cove team was also gallant in defeat pushing many of their tight losses right to the 18th green.
The match results in the Division One final were: Peter Lyon defeated Mitchell Varley 2/1; Lee Manning defeated Bailey Knoll 1 up; Zach Jansen defeated Paul Blake 1 up; Zach Ion went down to Norman Bonnet 1 down; Chad Baczkowski went down to Glen Thompson 1 down; Chris Melia went down to Charlie Hartwig 2 down and Travis Robie prevailed over Drew Herbert 1 up.
In the Division Two final also played also at Hope Island, Surfers Paradise proved too strong for the Hope Island team, winning the pennant five matches to two.
The Surfers Paradise team went through the season undefeated and will seriously challenge the top teams when they play in next year’s top district pennant competition.
Surfers captain Terry Barr experienced the win alongside his son Taylor who has now progressed to the top level of district golf.
