the push is on for electric vehicles and we will all have that feelgood thing about saving the planet.

Wacko, think of the savings on expensive petrol or diesel fuel, the only costs will be for a bit of electricity, servicing and tyres ... sounds too good to be true.

Here is the catch! The government will lose billions of dollars in revenue as a result of the loss of all the taxes currently hidden in fuel costs. My question is, how does government replace this serious mega loss of revenue? Answer, increase in power costs, dearer rego charges, maybe some scary plan of taxing us on kilometers travelled.

These electric vehicles do not run on torch batteries, they need super special batteries and are made using all sorts of nasty stuff. This nasty stuff will eventually present a problem when it comes to safe disposal of dead and unwanted batteries.

The safe disposal of nuclear waste is a tough issue now, these special batteries are going to present the same dilemma. DICK SAYER, ROBINA
