Slow out of blocks before a stumble

- TOM BOSWELL tom.boswell@news.com.au

GOLD Coast’s lacklustre start to their NEAFL games is becoming a trend with the Suns extending their winless start to the season to three games.

The Suns fell 94-56 to GWS at Blacktown International Sportspark on Saturday despite fielding 16 listed AFL players to the Giants’ 15.

Gold Coast kicked just two goals in the first half, while GWS recorded 10 to take a 49finally point lead into the major break.

Gold Coast were made to look slow against GWS and paid the price for some basic skill errors.

Aaron Young was among Gold Coast’s best, recording 38 disposals and a goal, while Josh Schoenfeld (28 disposals, one goal), Michael Rischitelli (27 disposals, one goal) and Brad Scheer (24 disposals, one goal and eight tackles) chipped in.

It wasn’t until the fourth and final term that Gold Coast

started to gain momentum but the game was already gone. The Suns kicked five goals in the fourth quarter and kept GWS to just two.

Zach Sproule was the greatest beneficiary of the Giants’ dominance, kicking five goals for his side, while Nick Shipley finished with 32 disposals.

It continues a disappointing run of slow starts for the Suns, who have been chasing from the outset in all of their opening three games. Gold Coast will face an unbeaten Brisbane side this Saturday at Metricon Stadium.
