Raptis unveils plan for 21-storey tower

THE son of veteran Gold Coast developer Jim Raptis wants to build a 21-storey tower in northern Broadbeach.

Evan Raptis has unveiled plans for the high-rise on Second Ave, just a short walk from the light rail route.

The unit complex would become the first high-rise on the block and would overlook the Gold Coast Hwy.

The younger Mr Raptis has teamed up on the project with his father, the man who built the Surfers Paradise Hilton.

“Pending council approval we anticipate construction to commence sometime in August,” Evan Raptis told the Bulletin last month.

“Broadbeach is going through a renaissance that has already seen a number of new projects either announced or under way, and we believe the area still has a need for well-priced, quality product.”

A development application was filed for the project last week by the company Second Avenue Development Management, which lists Jim Raptis as its sole director.

It is not linked to the Raptis Group which the elder Mr Raptis chairs.

According to documents filed with the Gold Coast City Council the tower is intended to be occupied “flexibly” by either permanent residential apartments or as short-term accommodation.

It will replace two existing single-storey houses.

There will be 54 twobedroom apartments and 36 three-bedroom units for a total of 216 bedrooms.

Three basement levels will have 131 carparking spaces.

Area councillor Paul Taylor said developers were eyeing off sites in Broadbeach’s north.

“The height limits were lifted there a few years ago and developers are starting to look there,” he said.

“Personally I would like to see more room between the towers to ensure there is enough space and I will be looking at this when it comes before the committee.

“With our growing population we are likely to see more buildings like this, especially along the light rail route. It is all about getting the population closer to the trams.”
