REVIEW
IF there’s one thing writer, director and producer Jordan Peele can accomplish more than anyone, it’s making me enjoy a scary movie despite my hatred for them.
His recent outpouring of movies have been surprisingly sinister, yet oddly refreshing for the horror genre, with his most recent movie Us being no exception.
When I decided to see this film, I knew that it would be psychologically thrilling – something I experienced during Mr Peele’s Oscarnominated movie Get Out.
On its own, Us has managed to create a powerful storyline that incorporates uncomfortable elements into its narrative. I was impressed that the “horror” in the story came from my own conclusions about the plot instead of in-your-face scares.
Similar to Get Out, this story involves themes of oppression and justice for minority groups – a common theme for both of his movies.
As someone who is not particularly fond of scary movies, I found this to hit a nice middle ground between psychological thriller and typical horror. While this was definitely scary, I actually found myself enjoying the colourful plot more than I anticipated. – Tatiana Carter
