MAKE IMPRESSIONS COUNT

-

NEW apprentices can set themselves up for success by making a good impression and knowing their worth.

They can do this by following simple onsite etiquette and making sensible choices.

The Bostik Boys – builder and landscape gardener Mark Menegatti and roofer Adrian Franchina – share their tips: BE ON TIME

Menegatti recommends turning up to work ahead of the start time.

“Don’t arrive on job and use the boss’ time to get out of your casual shoes and into your work shoes, unload tools, etc,” he says. USE YOUR INTUITION

“Don’t stand there waiting for the boss to ask for his or her next tool,” he says. “Read what’s going on so you’re ready with it before he or she asks.”

Menegatti advises apprentices to always look ready to help.

“An enthusiastic apprentice will go a long way,” he says. ASK QUESTIONS

Menegatti says apprentices are not expected to know everything. “Ask for help if you need it,” Menegatti says. “You are there to learn so make an effort to learn all you can.” TURN OFF YOUR PHONE

Menegatti says phones should not be used onsite unless calling a client. They should also be avoided during breaks as it is important to be part of

team banter. “Your co-workers like to shoot the breeze, so don’t be an airhead by looking down at your phone the whole time,” he says. SHOW SOME LOVE

Menegatti recommends apprentices make a gesture to show the boss they are appreciated, such as buying them a coffee. “The thought will go a long way and will put you ahead of the rest,” he says. KNOW YOUR WORTH

Franchina recommends apprentices contact Fair Work before they start to find out the minimum wage for a firstyear apprentice. PUT SAFETY FIRST

Franchina says if an apprentice does not feel safe, they must speak to their colleagues or boss.
