New Sherriff in town to run with Bulls

- BRENT O’NEILL

NEW Bonogin Valley head coach Dylan Sherriff will waste no time putting his stamp on the club as the Bulls step up plans to become Cricket Gold Coast’s next powerhouse.

After nine seasons at Helensvale Pacific Pines, Sherriff will embark on a new chapter in 2019-20 after being unveiled as Bonogin coach for the next two years.

The 25-year-old, who this season steered Helensvale to a best-ever club championship finish of third in his maiden coaching campaign, first linked with the Bulls in their premiership-winning winter team last year.

Formed in October 2017, the club fielded just one senior side in 2018-19, reaching the fourth grade semi-finals before bowing out against Mudgeeraba Nerang.

However, they plan to expand to as many as four teams next season including a third grade side, while they have also launched a $300,000 development of Davenport Park that will include nets, a clubhouse and lighting.

While sad to bid farewell to the Hawks, Sherriff, 25, said the chance to leave a legacy at Bonogin was something he “couldn’t pass up”.

“Being such a young club and being able to put your own stamp on it (was appealing), and me being a young coach as well. They gave me the opportunity to sign for two years and really make something of the way I want to do it so it was a good opportunity,” said offspinning all-rounder Sherriff, who will continue playing and coaching. “They’re moving up to third grade this year hopefully and (aim to) have three or four senior sides, which most clubs are trying to strive for, to get a good flow of players in.

“I see (playing third grade) as a backward step now but in the next couple of years it will be good seeing how far this young group goes.

“Probably in the next five years we’d have something in first grade. I’d love to take this side to first grade as a club coach and then see where it goes from there.”

A member of Helensvale’s maiden Kookaburra Cup grand final side in 2017-18, Sherriff said he would forever be indebted to the Hawks.
