HE was just four but little Sasha Hartmann had all the pluck and bravery of a soldier in battle.

When his mother screamed his name before collapsing unconscious to the floor from a heart ailment, the little boy did not panic. Instead, Sasha calmly picked up the phone, dialled 000 and saved his mother’s life.

Lapsing in and out of consciousness, mum Melita Hartmann’s panic and pain subsided as she heard her son’s collected conversation.

“Even as it was happening, I knew I could trust Sasha with my life. He’s that kind of little boy,’’ said Mrs Hartmann as she recovered in hospital.

“If it weren’t for him, I don’t know if I’d be here now. He was the only one who could save me and he did it like it was the simplest thing in the world.

“When I felt the chest pains coming I went into his room and said ‘Mummy doesn’t feel very well’, then it just hit me and I only had time to yell `Sasha, help!’ before I collapsed.

“The next thing I knew I could hear his little voice on the telephone.

“I heard him say ‘hello, this is Sasha Nicholas Hartmann and I live at (address withheld) in Robina and my phone number is (deleted). My mummy has a heart condition and has collapsed and she needs help very fast’,’’ she said.

“Then he stayed on the phone with them chatting the whole time until the ambulance and police arrived at our door.’’

Even then, faced with another hurdle as he was unable to open the dead-bolted front door, Sasha was quick to think of a solution – leading the emergency team to the garage instead where he pressed the automatic opener.
