Day of family pride

- TALISA ELEY

ANZAC Day holds special significance for the Bignell family who have marched at Coomera for more than a decade.

The proud military family represent several generations of servicemen, back to the First World War.

Chris Bignell, from Maudsland, lost his father, a WWII veteran, on Anzac Day 36 years ago.

Yesterday he was emotional as he reflected on the life of his father, who served as a non-commissioned officer across infantry, artillery and as a paratrooper during his military career.

“We use the day to commemorate all who fought, but we also remember him on this day,” Mr Bignell said.

Mr Bignell also served in the armed forces for five years with the Royal British Navy from 1962.

He has marched alongside his daughter Lana, 15, since she was just five.

Each year he wears his father’s medals, while Lana dons those of her great uncle and greatgreat uncle who also served.
