Avengers set records

MARVEL superhero blockbuster Avengers: Endgame is crushing the competition by setting multiple records at the box office a day after its release.

Disney said the film opened on Friday with a record US domestic haul of $US156.7 million ($A222.5 million), including Thursday previews, besting Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ $US119 million ($A168 million) in 2015.

Outside the US, Avengers: Endgame broke another record by grossing an estimated $US487 million ($A691 million) at the end of Friday.
