Ben’s new niche is King of the goals

- TOM BOSWELL

BEN King has experienced life at either end of the ground for the Suns but he has found his preferred role after kicking three goals against Brisbane’s NEAFL side.

The 202cm developing key position player and No.6 draft pick was among Gold Coast’s best in their 24.15 (159) to 9.8 (62) loss to the Lions on Saturday at Metricon Stadium along with fellow forward Sam Day, who also booted three majors.

Brisbane led at every change to consign the Suns to a fourth-straight loss.

King started the season off in the backline but Josh Corbett’s elevation to the senior side opened the door for a shift inside the forward 50m.

“I definitely prefer it up forward now,” King said.

“Kicking goals is better than playing down back so I’m really enjoying it.

“It was good to get on the end of a few up forward but the main thing is the team performance and we didn’t quite get it (done on Saturday).”

Aaron Young was also one of Gold Coast’s best, recording 40 disposals, nine marks and nine tackles.

Adding to Gold Coast’s woes was the loss of Brad Scheer, who left the field in the third quarter with a wrist injury and did not return.

Gold Coast will travel to Darwin this Saturday to play the Northern Territory while Southport, who had a bye last weekend, will play Sydney University at Blacktown International Sportspark.
