Bombettes seal deal in thriller
THE script for the QFAW division one elimination final rematch between Burleigh and Broadbeach couldn’t have been written much better with an after-the-siren set shot separating the two rivals.
Burleigh led all day and had a two-point advantage with less than five seconds to go when a free kick was paid in Broadbeach’s forward 50.
As second-year Cat Kimberley Rekers lined up for goal and the chance to complete all footballers’ childhood dream of winning a game after the siren, Bombettes coach Brent Male couldn’t believe his first game at the helm had come down to this.
“I was hoping they wouldn’t score,” he said.
“Either way, I was really proud of the girls because the game had been all about structures and putting our game plan in place but I was definitely nervous.”

Burleigh claimed their third straight win.
After navigating the first two rounds under the guidance of two player coaches, Male, who has worked as a PE teacher and played for Southport Sharks, said the next few weeks were all about developing their playing style.
“We want to take that extra step in our professionalism and not play a congested game but instead find space,” he said.
“It’s exciting to work with the girls because they’re all so eager to learn and improve.”
