A COOLY CLASSIC
RECORD numbers of more than 1200 turned out for the 10th anniversary of the Cooly Classic yesterday, with event director John Guise delighted to see Gold Coasters out in force to celebrate the occasion.
“It’s obviously our 10th year running the event and we had our biggest turnout ever this year,” Guise said.
“It’s awesome to see that the event is still growing 10 years on.”
MORE than 1200 people turned out to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Cooly Classic yesterday, with event director John Guise saying Gold Coasters were out in force to celebrate the occasion.
“It’s obviously our 10th year running the event and we had our biggest turnout ever this year,” he said.
“It’s awesome to see that the event is still growing 10 years on.”
The addition of a 5km course this year saw many elite swimmers take to the water at Coolangatta, with Australian World University Games squad member Moesha Johnson taking out the women’s division and backto-back pier to pub champion Hayden Cotter taking out the men’s race.
Jenaya Ecker won the women’s 3km, Kale Venz the men’s 3km, while Laura Brosnan and Connor Peabody took out the Cooly Classic 2.0.
Peabody backed it up with a win in the Cooly 1000, with
Siobhan Wyse winning the women’s race, while Sophie Hateley and Jeremy Kneen won the junior giants 1km swim.
“We always see those national representatives making up the top few spots,” Guise said.
Guise and his team couldn’t have picked a better day for the event, with conditions making life easy for competitors.
“Conditions were amazing,” he said.
“The surf and wind dropped right off and people who’ve swum the race before said it was the best conditions they’d raced in.”
