‘Speeding after row’

-

AN UNLICENSED driver clocked more than 70km/h over the speed limit on a Merrimac main road after a heated argument with his partner.

Christian Douglas McKay was caught travelling in his Ford Falcon at a whopping 142km/h in the 70km/h zone on Gooding Drive, near the Lakelands Golf Club, about 4.20pm on March 23.

The 21-year-old pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court yesterday to speeding and driving unlicensed.

He told officers he was trying to “get out” following a verbal argument with his partner and had not been keeping an eye on the car’s speedometer.

McKay was disqualified from driving at the time because he had accumulated too many demerit points.

The plasterer, who represented himself in court, asked about the possibility of being granted a work licence but Magistrate Ron Kilner said the request “would not be possible”.

He fined the young man $1600 and banned him from driving for six months.
