A 27-YEAR-OLD man has been taken into custody and is assisting police with their inquiries after a violent armed robbery at an Ormeau tavern.

The man has not been charged.

On Saturday, a trio of men, with their faces covered, shot their way into the Norfolk Tavern at 3.30am.

Shots were fired into the glass door so they could get into the building.

Police say the trio “terrorised” two staff members and two patrons with a gun and a machete.

The hold-up lasted around 10 minutes.

Acting Sergeant Brendan Wiblen said at the time it was a “very violent incident” and a created a “great deal of fear” for the people involved.

No one was injured in the robbery. The trio stole cash trays and a number of other items before leaving in a white Volkswagen Transporter van.

Police later found the van, which had been stolen burnt out at Tamborine.
