Time’s up for Browne

-

DAMIAN Browne, a jockey renowned for his ice cool patient rides, announced his retirement yesterday, ending a 30-year career that for a long time made him the toast of punters.

Browne fell ill on Magic Millions eve this year, requiring surgery for a perforated bowel. Following the surgery, it became apparent he could no longer take anti-inflammatories for his troublesome knees and ankles.

“In the back of my mind I knew it was over, but I always held that hope that I would be right,” he said. “It’s been difficult ... but getting my health right first was at the forefront of my mind.

“Obviously I have mixed emotions. I didn’t want to end this way but now the decision is made it’s time to move on.”
