HOW GOLD COAST PAIR SHAPE UP

Murray Goodwin, 32, grew up competing in athletics events on the Gold Coast, setting a number of records, before quitting in 2005 to focus on university and soccer. He returned to athletics in 2014, aged 27, and in 2015 won the Stawell Gift. Ellie Beer, 16, was the Gold Coast Academy of Sport’s female athlete of the year in 2017. She ran 52.53 sec in the 400m at the Queensland Track Classic in March, beating some of the top open female athletes, then won the 200m400m double in the under-17s at the nationals in Sydney.
