ALWAYS ON THEIR MINDS
THE Gold Coast has cemented itself in the minds of the world’s filmmakers — and news a Baz Luhrmann-directed biopic about Elvis Presley is coming this way will only further that reputation.
It is a credit to the many people who work in the industry on the Gold Coast that we keep seeing big-budget and high-profile movie productions announced in the city.
It appears credit is also due in Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk’s direction for her ability to sell the city as a location to Luhrmann, who is known for his epic productions, including Romeo & Juliet
and Australia.
The estimated $100 million filming of the as-yet-untitled Elvis biopic next year will be another welcome shot in the arm for that growing sector of the economy and follows major investment in production facilities including at Village Roadshow.
It is another in a long line of high-profile films but will arguably be one creating the most intrigue and promotion for the Gold Coast as a film location due to its content and A-list casting.
It has already been revealed that one of the world’s most recognisable big-screen faces, Tom Hanks, will be coming for the shoot early next year.
Only recently the Bulletin revealed Disney crime drama Reef Break was being filmed in the city hard on the heels of Dora the Explorer and big-budget Aquaman.
The industry is one which needs to be continually fostered and supported to keep the productions coming back.
There are plenty of other international locations vying for the film dollar.
Ms Palaszczuk, instrumental in ensuring Dora came to the Coast and contacted first-hand via a Luhrmann text to confirm the Elvis deal, has recognised the value.
Morrison Federal Government tax breaks have also proved vital of late in securing productions.
The political charm offensive on the film front will mean directors can’t help falling in love with the Coast.
