Sharks star plays down AFL interest

-

MACKENZIE Willis says interest from AFL recruiters has added to his belief he can return to the top level but was adamant he was yet to reach his best.

Multiple AFL clubs have inquired about the former Gold Coast Suns player following his strong start to the NEAFL season for premiers Southport Sharks.

Willis has been public about his desire to get a second chance at an AFL career and while he drew confidence from knowing he was on the radar of some clubs, he refused to read too much into it.

“It gives me a lot of confidence that clubs are still looking,” Willis said.

“It’s exciting for me (but I’m) certainly keeping a real level head about it.

“I have to play consistently and let the outside noise go over my head, focus on footy and the process of the year.

“As much as it is flattering I don’t read too much into it. It gives me a bit more self-belief I am on the right track.”

The 23-year-old arrived at Southport at the end of last year after being delisted by the Suns following a season-ending knee injury last May.

Willis said he believed he was still short of his best.

“Nine-and-a-half months is a very quick turn around from an ACL but I feel like I’m not at my absolute peak or 100 per cent yet,” Willis said.

“I feel I’m getting better every game. I still think I have some rust in terms of my touch. It’s probably just match conditioning in terms of my zip and speed around the contest.”
