BUDDING FASHIONISTAS URGED TO STEP FORWARD

- AMBER MACPHERSON

IF you have a flair for fashion but never flaunted it trackside, the Gold Coast Cup is calling for you.

This city’s second biggest race-day event tomorrow will host Fashions on the Field with a new category especially for novice style icons.

Gold Coast Cup ambassador Liz Cantor said the “newbie” section was to attract more talent to the popular fashion competition.

“We’d love you to feel welcome and join the fun, and I love an underdog.

“Judging criteria is the same as all categories but (it’s for) first-timers.”

Ms Cantor said unique outfits in keeping with the All That Glitters Is Gold theme would impress judges.

“For women, it’s about originality, colour and style, standard hem lengths and no visible cleavage or under garments, and no midriffs or playsuits.

“For the boys, it’s about originality, colour and style, tailored suits, attention to detail with accessories.

“I think you can have fun with All That Glitters Is Gold and incorporate it without being too obvious.”

Lace, floral and soft textures are popular in winter race-day fashion, and Ms Cantor said a classic hat always made an impression.

“I think we’ll see a lot of suits and blazers worn with felt hats, hair clips, or crowns, and dramatic sleeves on dresses,” she said.

“Headpiece trend-wise, turbans and crowns are still strong but I love the statement look of a hat. I also love the idea of fresh seasonal flowers, and understated hair clips.”
