THE Gold Coast Turf Club have moved to further protect the integrity of racing at the track by appointing senior Queensland steward Ian Brown as its new racing manager.

Brown will replace James Cable who has left after joining the club in August last year.

In one of the most unprecedented moves within Queensland racing circles in recent years, Brown will join the club in June after a decade serving as a senior steward with Racing Queensland and the Queensland Racing Integrity Commission.

GCTC chairman Brett Cook said Brown’s experience with integrity issues was at the forefront of their decision to appoint him given the current climate of racing in the state.

“With the integrity concerns in Queensland recently the GCTC want to be proactive in protecting our brand, sponsors and Gold Coast industry participants,” Cook said.

“Ian will be a great addition to the team to make sure this happens.

“He is highly regarded in the racing fraternity and has a depth of industry knowledge.”

Brown has an intimate knowledge of the industry and its stakeholders on the Gold Coast and is also a qualified solicitor.

“It’s fantastic to welcome Ian into the team as the club progresses towards becoming one of the best racing centres in Australia,” Cook said.

“His appointment fits within our long-term strategy and the masterplan that we have in place for the Gold Coast which includes planned track upgrades and opportunities for night racing.”

Brown said he was to join the club.

“I’ve really enjoyed the regulatory role over the last 10 years but it’s time for a new challenge,” Brown said.

“It’s an exciting time for the Gold Coast Turf Club and I’m delighted looking forward to assisting the club in implementing its plans.”

GCTC CEO Steve Lines said it was a significant opportunity to employ someone of Brown’s experience from the racing fraternity.

“Ian’s appointment supports our vision towards building this club into a shining light for racing in Queensland and Australia,” Lines said.
