Business enjoys its Recovery position

- ALISTER THOMSON

A BOUTIQUE health and fitness business in Burleigh Heads is helping to mobilise everyone from dancers to the elderly to elite athletes with its one-on-one client focus.

RecoveryBar is the brainchild of hockey coach and exercise physiologist Lou Ferguson.

Ms Ferguson said the “light bulb” moment came six years ago when she attended a crossfit competition with a friend.

“It was day three and in the athlete room I noticed so many broken bodies with people who were sore, broken, had no energy,” she said.

“The real ‘aha’ moment came when I saw one athlete lying on the ground and one of his mates had to pack his body in ice because he was that sore.”

Ms Ferguson decided to launch RecoveryBar from her garage in Miami, primarily as an events-focused business that took recovery tools, such as remedial massage, to sporting events.

“We started going to crossfit events and then we moved into hockey, surf life saving, Oztag,” she said.

“We would take the recovery to the people. After that gained momentum, I thought what if I had a place where people could come in between events? That’s when I found a permanent location.”

Three years in she moved into a permanent location and one year ago shifted to a top level space at a Burleigh Heads fitness complex, also home to a gym and cheerleading studio.

Services include water (hot and cold), compression, stretch and massage therapy.

Ms Ferguson said her business avoids a “cookie cutter” approach.

“We pride ourselves on taking care of every single client who steps in here,” she said.

“Every client receives one-on-one attention. We ask them what things they want to achieve and how we can best help them. We then formulate a recovery plan suited to their needs.”

She sees between 40 and 60 clients per week in addition to the customers her four staff see each week.

Clients include weightlifter Brandon Wakeling and sprinter Ellie Beer.

She said her aim was to help people be the best version of themselves.

“And that is whatever that means to a particular person. So for athletes maximising athletic performance but if it’s a dancer, it means helping them maximise their dancing performance.”
