CURRUMBIN’S ‘BOGEY’ TEAM STRIKES AGAIN

- ELIZA REILLY eliza.reilly@news.com.au

CURRUMBIN Eagles coach Ryan Gundry admits that what once an enticing rivalry for his side has now become a mental battle after going down to Southport 25-10 yesterday afternoon.

“They were the first team to beat our unbeaten streak last year and they beat us Round 1 this year so if you were to call them our bogey team then I’d agree,” he said.

“They play a style of football that makes us uncomfortable.”

The Rugby League Gold Coast loss saw Currumbin drop one spot to fourth on the first grade competition ladder with Gundry admitting his side wasn’t up to the Round 7 challenge.

“We were average to be honest,” he said.

“They were good and did all the little things right.

“I feel like we built a lot of momentum into the bye but then we had that two-week break with Easter and the

bye which hurt us because we lost a lot of match fitness.

“It’s one of those things you can only build up through playing games so we’ll focus on that and working hard on the little things.”

Despite the loss, Gundry couldn’t fault his side’s effort.

“It wasn’t like anyone didn’t have a go,” he said.

“They all tried their best but our best wasn’t good enough.”

In yesterday’s other matches, Tugun caused a stunning near upset after drawing 16-16 with ladder leaders Burleigh while Runaway Bay defeated Ormeau 42-12.
