Seniors serve up real treat
LONG weekends are best spent taking time out to do what you love.
And for the Coast’s senior tennis players, that is exactly how they spent this past weekend.
It all happened at the Gold Coast Seniors May Tournament, hosted by Gold Coast Seniors Tennis Club for the 34th year in a row.
And what happened at the Gold Coast Seniors May Tournament?
The obvious answer would be incredible, awe-inspiring and unforgettable tennis smashed out by local, state, national and international champions, Australian team representations, ITF world-ranked players and many other tennis talents.
Another answer goes something like ... 174 players aged between 35 and 89 taking to the courts to battle it out in more than 30 events across singles, doubles and mixed doubles playing a total of 400 matches on 20 courts in just three days.
So maybe the question should have been, what didn’t happen?
With a strong club presence both on court and off court, the tournament was well supported by the dedicated and devoted members of Gold Coast Seniors Tennis Club.
Club racquet stringer Tony Stapleton teamed up with club captain Allan Jones to take out the men’s 60-plus doubles event, while husband and wife duo Kerryn and Patrick Cyprien took to the court together in the mixed doubles event.
Kerryn also teamed up with fellow member Linda Roberts to take out the ladies doubles title – for the 10th year in a row.
Club president Bettiann Gain also took to the courts teaming up with another club president, Mike Ford from Tennis Gold Coast, in the mixed doubles event.
While that concludes another successful Gold Coast Seniors May Tournament, the club now goes into preparation mode to host the Queensland Seniors State Titles in July.
CARRARA’S Hayden Jones has won Brisbane’s Shaw Park Junior Championship with a walkover victory over Hugh Pfitzner in the under-14 boys’ final.
Jones was ranked No.1 for the tournament which wrapped up yesterday despite rain interruptions on Saturday.
Fellow KDV Sports member Oliver King won the boys’ under-12s crown.
