COAST STUDENTS GOING POTTY OVER QUIDDITCH

- KIRSTIN PAYNE

A GOLD COAST high school is putting the magic back into learning with the launch of its inaugural quidditch tournament.

Based on the sport of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Helensvale State High School students are taking part in a version for muggles, that is, non-magical folk.

“It’s about participating and promoting the joy of reading and bringing the books to life in their own world,” teacher librarian Marnie Griffiths said.

The tournament, which has more than 30 students and staff members involved, is part of second term themed activities in the Student Wellbeing and eLearning Lounge (SWeLL).

“While in the books quidditch is played by seven broom-flying players on a massive pitch, the Muggle Indoor Quidditch is quite different,” Ms Griffiths said.

There are just four players, one for each of the positions (seeker, keeper, catcher and beater) and no brooms, magic or otherwise.

However, the object is the same – players score points by sending the quaffle through the hoops.

Teams aim to score as many times as possible before the hidden golden snitch is found by the seekers, ending the game.

Eight teams are set to face off during lunch time during the next few months.

Learning support teacher aide Sue Wright said the cup champions would win galleons (the wizarding world’s currency) which could be spent on handmade goodies.
