It’s young talent time to start the Coast Open

-

TWEED and Gold Coast’s next generation of surfers have hit the water running at Burleigh Point.

Yesterday’s first day of the Gold Coast Open may have largely gone to plan but it delivered a spectacular array of performances from those most familiar to these beaches.

The Pro Junior field took to tricky 2-3 foot waves on a picture-perfect day that saw a string of high scores.

Young hopeful Dakoda Walters (Angourie) made the trip north for the event and was stoked to take first place in his Round 1 heat, defeating Blake Neka (Kingscliff), Micah Margieson (Cabarita) and Jackson Graham (Currumbin).

“I’m happy to get the heat win,” said Walters.

“It felt great surfing some good waves with my friends. I’m good mates with all the boys in that heat so it was a lot of fun. I’ve been looking forward to this event for a while, Angourie is a similar righthand point break so I definitely feel at home here.”

Gold Coast local Jaggar Bartholomew wasted no time taking out his Round 1 heat, defeating Zane Assink (Yaroomba), Ty Richardson (Palm Beach) and Archer Curtis (Palm Beach) respectively.

Young gun and current WSL women’s Australasian Junior Tour leader Molly Picklum (Shelly Beach) wasted no time easing through her round one heat in the women’s Pro Junior division.

The WQS event could get underway today – with the event window being from May 8-12 – while the Pro Junior event will wrap up today.
