A GOLD Coast personal trainer is closing in on a lads magazine cover contest and $10,000 prize.

Swimsuit model Soraya Johnston, 26, was in the lead among eight finalists as of last night in the quest to be Maxim Cover Girl Australia.

She’s come a long way from practising posing in the mirror when a young girl growing up Mount Isa.

The indigenous body builder and former youth worker is also fresh on the back of winning an Australia Model Search heat SinCity at the weekend.

“I moved to the Gold Coast a year-and-a-half ago for more opportunit­ies,” Miss Johnston said.

“But it was so hard leaving because I am a very family orientated person. The town of Mount Isa has been behind me the whole way through.”

Born into a sporting family, including a dad who was a profession­al boxer, she says a healthy and active lifestyle has been ingrained into her. A consistent routine of clean eating and high-intensity workouts helped to keep her body photoshoot ready, she said.

The winner is decided by public voting which ends at 11pm tonight.

Up for grabs is the opportunit­y to feature in a spread in both the Australian and US editions of Maxim magazine plus $10,000 cash.
