PEDDLING OUR SPORTING VIRTUES

- BRIANNA MORRIS-GRANT

THE Gold Coast has welcomed everything from basketball to E-sports to skipping rope for the 2019 Sport-Accord Summit.

The summit brings together the world’s biggest sporting bodies and aims to partner them with host venues, among them the Olympics Committee.

BMX champion and Maudsland resident Logan Martin said he was excited to see the Gold Coast in the running for a number of events.

“Australia has a really good freestyle BMX scene and obviously we’re quite far away from where all the events are being held,” he said. “So it’s difficult for the up-and-coming riders to get flights overseas. It would be good to bring the events to the Gold Coast.”

Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate said it was top priority to ensure the sporting world’s heavy hitters had “the best week of their lives”.

“We have shown them our city and venues and even got them up and activated through our Active and Healthy Program,” he said.

“The delegates are getting a real taste of the Coast.

“Luring big events to the Gold Coast remains a key priority and we have city officers at SportAccord to ensure we consider every opportunity that presents itself this week.”
