Curry on with bail
A GROUP of Indian nationals who allegedly attacked a man and his wife with knives and a stone during a raid on a Surfers Paradise curry restaurant remain on bail as their case crawls through the courts.
The five men are accused of storming India Gate restaurant and stabbing owner Gagandeep Singh in the head repeatedly and his wife Gurjeet Kaur in the hands shortly after 10pm on October 9, 2017.
The wounding was the result of an ongoing feud between one of the men who’s been charged, Sanjeev Kaushal, and the venue owner, Southport Magistrates Court was previously told.
The case was raised again in Southport District Court today.
Kaushal, 49, of Molendinar, Jatinder Singh Bajwa, 33 and Narinder Singh Bajwa, 31, of Upper Coomera, Sukhjinder Singh, 33, of Surfers Paradise and Jassi Jaswinder Singh, 36, of Pimpama have all been charged with two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm and one of entering premises with intent.
Kaushal and Jatinder Singh Bajwa have also been charged with stealing, while Sukhjinder Singh faces an additional charge of wilful damage.
In court, four lawyers appeared together on behalf of the men to update Judge Catherine McGuiness on the case.
They revealed some of their clients had issues obtaining legal aid and fresh applications could take up to four to six weeks to be decided.
The case was set to go to trial before the hitches in the legal aid process became apparent.
Crown prosecutor Denise Darwen asked for a new date to be set aside for trial.
Judge McGuiness adjourned to June 13 for an update and the case was set down for a trial starting in early November.
