Rivals find a common goal

- – ELIZA REILLY

A SPORTING rivalry became a partnership on Wednesday night when Burleigh Bombettes and Robina Roos women’s football clubs came together to develop the future of Gold Coast female Aussie rules.

With the Burleigh QFAW Division 1 outfit and Robina’s Division 2 team both having byes this weekend, the clubs played a scratch match to give their players an insight into the different sides of the game.

Some of Burleigh’s senior players were given the opportunity to take on a coaching role to develop their mentoring skill set for the future.

Burleigh captain Lauren Theodore took on the role of forwards coach in the scratch match and believes the experience will allow her to act as an on-field coach.

“We got to see the game from the sidelines which was great for me as a forward because I’ll be able to help our forwards on game day and make adjustments on the field,” she said.

“It was my first time coaching so it was good to see how our structures were holding up.

“Hopefully they (Robina) have learnt a bit off us because this is the second year they’ve run a women’s team and so they might look at us and think that’s where we were five years ago.”

With a number of Robina’s players new to Aussie rules this year, Burleigh coach Brent Male believes both teams would benefit from the match.
