Sea World told to end breeding

-

ANIMAL activists have called on the state government to force Sea World to end its captive breeding program during a lively protest.

Around 40 people, representing three animal rights groups, gathered opposite the theme park on Saturday urging Sea World to stop using animals for entertainment.

“This needs to be the last generation of dolphins in captivity, the Queensland government has the ability to do that, they regulate the venue and they could turn around tomorrow and tell Sea World to stop breeding,” World Animal Protection’s Ben Pearson said.

“It’s not about closing down Sea World, we’d like to see people enjoy Sea World and the rides, but not have captive animals.”

Sea World is now the only Australian venue for captive breeding after a facility in Coffs Harbour announced it would close down its program.

Mr Pearson said that put a target on Sea World’s back.

A Sea World spokesperson told the Bulletin the theme park was an accredited zoological institution under the Zoo and Aquarium Association, and prided itself on looking after its animals.

“Reproduction is a natural process which enriches the lives of the animals and helps contribute to positive welfare of the animals, which is our utmost priority,” they said.

Protesters came from as far away as Sydney and Melbourne to join the action.

The protestors stressed they were not affiliated with Justice For Captives, a group
