Full steam ahead for Becky

- – JIM TUCKER

AMATEUR Becky Kay’s commendable finish at 31st in her first tilt at a pro tournament abroad has fortified her belief she can one day make a successful switch full-time.

The Gold Coaster (72-74-72) eagled the par five 11th in yesterday’s final round as a highlight of her visit to the EFG Hong Kong Ladies Open.

The Coolangatta and Tweed Heads Golf Club member finished two-over-par for the week after battling a health hiccup in the first round of the $214,000 event.

“It was not my best golf but I gave it my all and am really grateful for the invitation to gain such experience,” Kay, 20, said. “I hit a great drive, played a nice little hybrid and sank a 10-footer for eagle so I did enjoy the 11th all week (after birdies there in the opening two rounds).

“That got me under par for the round but a bogey and just steady golf from there made it a 72 to finish. I enjoyed doing a press conference with (Hong Kong’s) Tiffany Chan because her pathway is one I really want to follow (from amateur star to the elite LPGA).”

Without their top gun, the Queensland team still reached the final of the Australian Interstate Teams event at Royal Hobart last week.
