SHEARERS GIVE SCARE TO TUGUN

- CONNOR O’BRIEN

TUGUN have hung on by the skin of their teeth to jag their second win of the Rugby League Gold Coast season against a determined Ormeau.

The Shearers trimmed the deficit from 16 points to four to offer a major scare as Tugun’s Wyndham Peachey and Lachlan Watt fumbled multiple kick returns. Ormeau had a last-play roll of the dice to steal victory before going down 22-18.

Seahawks five-eighth Isaac Worboys, hailed by coach Clint Barends as a “fantastic fit” since joining from Byron Bay in the off-season, scored the visitors’ fourth try, which put them far enough ahead.

“There’s a few errors that we can’t afford to keep in our game but the boys dug deep and defended back-to-back sets there, which is a credit to them,” Worboys, 20, said.

Barends may have unearthed a stroke of genius by switching centre Kody Parsons to second-row – alongside Worboys on the left edge – the past two weeks, with the Tweed-affiliated player again standing out.

“You wonder why he is not in the QCup side for Tweed but we’re lucky to have him with us,” Worboys said.

Around the grounds, Southport defeated Runaway Bay 30-26, while Currumbin accounted for Bilambil 52-8.
